Marine Corps Colors, Standards, Guidons and Flags

Many years ago while my husband was a drill instructor, he was asked "who carries the Flag into battle?" In his diary he states that his reply was "every Marine carries the Flag into battle". There is a Marine proverb that states "The Flag is a jealous mistress." Any Marine will fight and die rather than permit the National Colors or a Marine Corps Color to be dishonored. My husband's manual states: "Colors or Standards MUST never fall into enemy hands. If capture seems inevitable, they should be burned. Marine Corps terms which deal with flags are precise and particular. As Marines we need to learn to distinguish the various kinds of flags and to speak of them in the correct terminology."
