|A street was an urban feature. Street naming in the history of America is really almost like a sketch. The idea is easy. Streets tended to be named for landmarks, such as topographic or hydrological features, relationships as to how the street was positioned, the automobile, English baronial imagery, views of nature, symbols of power and authority, Greek architecture, picturesque and romantic, asymmetric Gothic and even federal home financing agencies. |
Whether the street is named aesthetically, or any other way, you'll find the street easy to name. I'll give you a really easy clue and you'll easily choose the name of the street.
BTW: Alleys were often named in a possessive manner since the landowner owned the alley. New York and Philadelphia were ahead of the curve because they numbered their streets. But, by 1850 most American cities would use the pattern.
Thank you for taking my quiz.
