The mission statement for the National Institute of Standards and Technology includes: "Strengthening... Innovation..." Standards are the backbone of measurement and provide for the interchangeability of parts, a critical ingredient in assembly line production. However, it is helpful when all nations agree on the standard. The alternative is for each country to fend for itself using adapters to interface with other nations' technology. Think of Beta and VHS. How about HD TV? This quiz looks at some of those standards.
