|These new countries consolidated power and created the foundations of modern European nation-states. The modern day states grew stronger in Western Europe and weaker in the East during the Middle Ages. They were not true nation-states yet as nationalism did not become a force until late the 18th century. However, they were not truly absolutist in nature until the 17th century. |
