Dick Francis entertained the reading world for the best part of 40 years, though it certainly seems shorter than that to those of us who began enjoying them early in the running. Though they are centered on English racing, they encompass a very broad range of interests and professions, and if you have avoided his books because you have no interest in horses, you might put that disinterest aside and give his books a shot - he had the talent to make anything he wrote about interesting. Though he began his career as a horseman at a very early age, it wasn't until after he had served in the RAF in WWII that he became a steeplechase jockey, and a most successful one at that!
