Modern international law owes its origins to the Romans, but it was during the Middle Ages that the need for international arbitration began to fully develop. Later the Dutchman, Hugo Grotius, broadened international law with his works on freedom of the seas and trade, as well the concepts of “just war”. From this, the evolution of international law continued in its quest of maintaining relations between the various states of Europe. The following quiz provides for an overview of several significant peace treaties in European history prior to the time of Napoleon. Sources: My notes and Wiki for additional choices.
