In “The American Cinema: Directors and Directions 1929-1968” Andrew Sarris formalized the pantheon of directors that he had been developing on the pages of “The Village Voice” and “Film Culture.” Sarris was an influential critic and proponent of the auteur theory of film, and his famous pantheon focuses upon directors of films released in America, although the directors are of multiple nationalities. Sarris’s pantheon was limited to those directors who, as of 1968, put personal stamps on their work. “These are the directors who have transcended their technical problems with a personal vision of the world. To speak any of their names is to evoke a self-contained world with its own laws and landscapes. They were also fortunate enough to find the proper conditions and collaborators for the full expression of their talent.” This quiz is about the members of that pantheon. Sarris identified 14 directors in his pantheon, so there will be 14 questions plus a bonus, for a total of 15 in this quiz. So start up the popcorn, hit “Start Quiz,” and let the screenings begin.
