Every year since 1978, the United States Postal Service ("USPS") has issued one new first-class commemorative stamp in its Black Heritage series. Some of the African-Americans selected for the series - like Harriet Tubman, who was pictured on the first Black Heritage stamp when it cost 13 cents to mail a letter - are well known to most Americans, regardless of race. Others, like Allison Davis - who is pictured in the First Day of Issue cover that is attached to this quiz - I suspect are little known by members of any race. (He was an anthropologist and educator who is probably best remembered for his groundbreaking research on race and class in the South of the 1930s.) I have tried to steer a middle ground in this quiz between the famous and the relatively obscure. Your objective is to identify the celebrated African-American who is featured on one of the 31 (to date) commemoratives in the Black Heritage series from the biographical information included as part of each question. Sources: Wikkipedia, the on-line encyclopedia, supplemented by several other websites. As always, I will provide sources in the case the accuracy of an answer is questioned or, if I am wrong, I will correct the answer and extend you my gratitude.
