(Image: Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem, Israel) The "Holocaust" refers to the systematic state-sponsored persecution and genocide of the Jews of Europe and North Africa along with other groups during World War II by Nazi Germany and the Axis powers. Other victims include religious groups such as Jehovah's Witnesses, Freemasons and Catholic and Protestant clergy; the mentally and physically disabled; homosexuals; prisoners of war; intelligentsia and political activists; and races that were deemed inferior. More than 9 million people died, which according to death toll estimates include around 6 million Jews and 1.9 million Gentile Poles. It is the greatest atrocity in history ever perpetrated by man against fellow man. But there are many extraordinary men and women, who, at great personal risks, would do all they can to save lives. Most of their deeds may have gone unnoticed during their lifetimes but many have been honored by Israel?s Yad Vashem memorial with the title ?Righteous Among the Nations,? recognizing those non-Jews who helped save Jews from the Holocaust. Can you identify them?
