In 1925, Earl Derr Biggers introduced mystery lovers everywhere to the humble Honolulu detective Charlie Chan. Chan was born in China, and migrated to the Islands with his parents. After joining the police force, he quickly rose to the rank of Sergeant. Married, with 14 children, he was often accompanied by one of his sons, with or without his permission. They all lived on Punchbowl Hill, overlooking Honolulu. Biggers and his wife had vacationed in Hawaii. He decided to write a story using Honolulu as the setting. He happened to read a story about a Chinese detective working for the Honolulu police, Sergeant Chang Apana, who became the model for Charlie. Although Biggers only wrote 6 Chan novels before his death, these inspired plays, over 50 movies, radio shows, comic books, comic strips, a board game, a card game and a Saturday cartoon! Some of the earliest movies are "lost". Along the way, Chan was promoted to Lieutenant and was often called Inspector. There are no movie title questions, no dates.
