All but the oldest among us have gone through our entire lives knowing that Pluto was the ninth of nine planets in our Solar System. Recently, though, there has been a movement among astronomers to "demote" Pluto from planetary status, and as this quiz is being written (August, 2006), astronomers are planning on a vote regarding the official status of Pluto and several other heavenly bodies. This quiz focuses on Pluto, whatever it is. We will explore what we have learned about Pluto, as well as some of the issues surrounding the current controversy as to its status. Much of the material on the current situation is based on an article by Rob Stein and a column by Dava Sobel in the August 16, 2006 edition of the Washington Post. Some of the older facts and figures come from "University Astronomy," by Pasachoff and Kutner.
