Following World War II, European nations experienced the disintegration of their colonial empires. Between 1947 and 1962, almost every colonial holding received its independence. And this one's right in 'my' time.
For better or worse I was right in this lot in the 1950s, in the old Aden Sultanates, now part of Yemen.
Worse because I took a bashing, better because it introduced me to the deserts, which remained a lifelong interest. As is also Empire history/geography as a whole.
But all very non-PC these days of course!
