Christian Mystics of the Past
![]() |
Since Christians believe that God dwells in them through the Holy Spirit, they believe it is therefore possible to experience God directly. Mysticism is the philosophy and practice of a direct experience of God. Christian mysticism is traditionally pursued through the practice of the disciplines of prayer , fasting, and alms-giving and service to others. They do not believe that the Word of God can be contradicted by an experience, however; only that it can be confirmed and better understood. Throughout history, there have been many mystics in all branches of the faith. Some, especially early ones, may have erred in some ways but there is almost always something you can learn from them. Be warned, though - their writings are often difficult to read and comprehend. Note: I subscribe to a generous orthodoxy as far as judging who belongs and who does not belong in the family of God; therefore, this quiz will include both Protestants and people who lived in the Catholic Church both before and after the Protestant Reformation. If that offends you, you may not want to take this quiz. (-:
