'The Mad Monk'...Rasputin

Grigori Rasputin was a Russian monk. He gained a strange power over the Tsar of Russia. It is thought that Rasputin was born in 1872 in Siberia. He wandered the country as a priest and healer, claiming to have almost magical powers. In 1905 he came to St. Petersburg and won the favour of the Tsar and Tsarina, whose son suffered from a rare blood disease. Rasputin seemed to be able to help the boy in ways no doctor could. Through his influence he became very powerful. He used this power badly; he lived wildly, gave the Tsar bad advice and prevented much needed reforms. In 1916 a group of noblemen murdered him.
