Sense of Smell
![]() |
The sensory end organs, or receptors, for smell are located in the olfactory epithelium of the upper part of the nasal cavity. Because they are high in the nasal cavity, an animal or a person "sniffs" in order to bring the gases responsible for an odor upward in the nose. The pathway of the impulses from the receptors for smell is the olfactory nerve. This leads to the olfactory center in the brain. The interpretation of smell is closely related to the sense of taste.
