Singers and Groups That Started in Motown

I have lived in Fl. for 9 years but will always consider Detroit my "home". Berry Gordy Jr. started the recording company of Motown in Detroit in 1959. He borrowed $800 from family, bought a house, and set up shop. Prior to that he had tried to become a professional boxer, worked on the line at Ford, and owned a record store which went bankrupt. The house is now a museum. He learned something valuable working at Ford. Singers did their job, writers theirs, promoters theirs, etc., and no one got into another person's area - assembly line at work. He gave Black performers a place to record and that was not always easy for them to find. Something called "the white cover" was common at that time as well. It was simply that a White singer or group would record a song which had been previosly been recorded by a Black artist or group and the White version was the one most played by DJ's on air. The promoters had to work extra hard to get the Motown recording heard by the general public. In later years some of the people he had helped to make stars had differences with him and left to record for other labels. He moved his headquarters to LA in the early 70s. My two main sources are, "State News - Molding Motown" and "The Ultimate Motown Collection of Chronological Discographies". (I used various other sites for info about artists.) In this quiz there are no artists who began their career later than the early 70s. Some have done much recording since then and as of 2006, some are still recording. Hope you enjoy.
