Even if you know little about Tall Poppy Syndrome, please take the quiz. You will know the answers to these questions about famous Australian Tall Poppies! I hope you all learn a little about this cultural aspect of Australia and a few other countries just by taking this quiz. Have fun! Tall Poppy Syndrome is a phrase used in Australia, Canada and New Zealand to describe the way in which society in these countries likes to bring everyone down to the same level. People are targets of tall poppy syndrome when they make a concerted effort to improve at any level, be it sporting, academic or political. In Australia talented people are often criticized or resented because their abilities or achievements elevate them above the everyday person. Opportunities are sought to cut them down to size wherever possible. One aspect of tall poppy syndrome is that Australians will not tolerate an achiever if their behaviour is inappropriate or they appear too self satisfied with their success. This is particularly so in the sporting arena or in the entertainment industry. At school level it can be a huge problem because successful students are often targeted by their peers to the extent that talented individuals often don't reach their full potential, they would rather remain 'incognito'. There are of course many who rise above this, despite the pressures on them to not succeed and this quiz will look at talented and successful Australians who are tall poppies that Australia is very proud of.
