The 10 Most Common Chain Stores in NYC
![]() |
The Center for an Urban Future has confirmed what many New Yorkers have been noticing the past few years and that is that many national retailers have been smothering New York City little by little over the past few years until it has gotten to this point: There are no less than 5,716 chain outlets throughout the five boroughs with 32 different retailers having 50 or more stores in the city as of July 2008. Critics of this phenomena fear that this trend will alter the cityscape, questioning whether the city will lose some of its uniqueness. Mom and Pop stores are a valuable economic entity of any city since they tend to keep money in the city as opposed to chain stores that send out their profits to corporate headquarters outside of the city. A task force has been set up to see what can be done to save small businesses since many feel that tourists don’t come to NYC to shop at Costco. On the other hand people do like to search out a bargain whenever they can especially in difficult economic times. Well, while we wait to see how things shake out, here’s a quiz about the top ten retail stores with the most number of outlets in New York City. Please rate the quiz afterward if you can. Thanks! Best wishes, Good Luck, Bill

Wait a minute, Payless sells athletic shoes.
Well, I failed. But I do feel the pain. It's the same everywhere. I grew up in a mid-sized town in NJ and at that time, the only "chain" store in town was Woolworth's. (Yes, I really am that old.) I was last back there in 2003 and didn't recognize Broad Street...still looks the same, until you notice that it's a Banana Republic next to a Gap next to a Starbucks. Jeez.
