|One of bloodiest days in American history happened on September 17, 1862. 3564 Americans were killed at The Battle of Antietam. There were nearly 23,000 casualties in all.|
Some might argue that The Battle of Antietam was not a great Union victory. Antietam did provide Abraham Lincoln with significant political capital that he would use to change the Union's objectives. No longer content to just preserve the Union, Lincoln now raised the bar.
