This is the first of what I hope will be a series of quizzes. They are for the classical music novice as well as the seasoned listener. The questions focus on some of the greatest pieces of classical music ever written. More importantly they will help you find what is arguably the best performance of each piece currently available. I hope you will consider printing off a copy of this quiz when you are done and using it as a reference. Take it to your local CD store or your favorite music download site to help build your own classical music library. Because choosing the best recording is somewhat subjective I have used a host of references and took the majority opinion. These include The American Record Guide, The Penguin Guide to Classical Music, Gramophone Classical Good CD Guide, and the BBC Music Magazine.

Great quiz. I happen to have most of the performances you cite and agree with the majority of the choices... and to the one or 2 I disagree with, well, that's the fun of it, isn't it?
Fantastic quiz, I spent ten minutes on the first question but it was worth it..the only thing missing is the music itself so I would say music maestro Slicko.I am quite familliar with Berlioz, he was born less than 100 miles from my birthplace
