The Chinese: Explorers or Frauds?
![]() |
The British author, Gavin Menzies caused a sensation when he released the book, '1421: The Year China Discovered the World'. He claims that it was not the Europeans who discovered the New World, The Cape of Good Hope, Australia and New Zealand and Antarctica to name a few, but the Chinese who did, decades and centuries before any European even set eyes on those coveted lands...However, since the book has been released Menzies has come under massive criticism from many experts in the exploratory field and other writers. In this quiz, I will try to find a median between these two views, and also provide a certain amount of knowledge for those that have never heard of this. Sources used include 1421: The Year China Discovered the World and Wikipedia.

Menzies is a charlatan and his books are pure fantasy. No
actual historian believes this junk. For a good account of the
actual Ming Voyages, see Louise Levathes' book "When
China Ruled the Seas," which relates the actual facts of
Zheng he's voyages.

sounded a bit much. it appears he has been subjected to
scrutiny similar to the now forgotten and discredited book
about gun ownership in early America. That author almost
reduced himself to saying his dog ate his notes. Reptilicus
