The Cypressriver Holiday Quiz
![]() |
Welcome to the December Challenge Quizzes -- a game for quiz takers and makers. This quiz is about Father Christmas. To keep the questions short and sweet, I’ll provide some background information here. In some cultures “Father Christmas,” “Santa Claus,” and “Saint Nicholas” are used interchangeably. In other cultures they are separate entities with separate traditions and varying religious significance. Father Christmas (or Old Man Winter) is an ancient legendary figure and Saint Nicholas was an actual person. "Santa Claus" arose in the U.S. in New Amsterdam from legends surrounding the historical Saint Nicholas, whom the Dutch settlers called "Sinterklaas." These three figures have merged with various European Old Man Winter legends to create the Santa that we know today. (Information is from Wikipedia and various folklore anthologies.) Happy Holidays!
