The European Enlightenment
![]() |
Historical Background: The Enlightenment was an era which saw the increasing secularization of society following the Scientific Revolution. There was a belief that science and logic could now explain all aspects of life. Faith in reason now replaced faith in revelation. In addition, the Enlightenment figures believed that science and reason could bring progress in human society. Education was pivotal in bringing about a better world. This movement influenced the politics and society of the 18th century tremendously, and would also play a key role in the intellectual foundation of the Age of Revolutions to follow. Good luck, as always! Sources: My notes, and Wikipedia for additional help for some decent alternative choices. In addition, when transposing German words into English, I elected to substitute "oe" in place of the umlauted o. Hope that clarifies matters. Image is of a stature of Voltaire
