|Late 2006, Australian Prime Minister John Howard called his Senate together for a closed-door discussion. Mr Howard has just returned from a trip to America, shoring up bilateral trade agreements and our military alliance.|
President George Bush has proved to be a great ally and friend of John Howard, and took him for a quick trip around America's distinctive landmarks.
Whilst flying over South Dakota, Mr. Howard was captivated by the four faces carved on Mt. Rushmore. He asked a lot of questions, and formulated a plan.
He thought it would be a wonderful idea to appoint a sculptor to carve images of famous Australians (himself possibly included) on the back side of Uluru, (formerly known as Ayres Rock).
He wanted this massive undertaking to rival, or even exceed the grandeur of Mt. Rushmore.
It is Mr Howard's belief is this wondrous monument sculpture will further solidify the alliance we have with America, plus be a lucrative tourist attraction. Tourist dollars will flow in once this carving is complete, because at present, visitors only see one face of The Rock..they will stay longer, and tour the whole region when there is more to see!
The image is a mock-up of the ten famous Australian faces that will be immortalised on the rear side of Uluru, Central Australia. The Sydney Opera House is also commemorated in Bas-Relief.
