TheGreatMortalityBubonicPlague Photo The Great Mortality, aka the Black Death, or as it is better known today, the Bubonic Plague, arrived in Europe in the early 1340s. Some still debate the origins of the pandemic. There is evidence to suggest that it originated on the steppes of Mongolia, and traveled out of Mongolia via the conquering Mongols on horseback. Treatment of the disease by medieval physicians revealed the historic biases and general lack of medical training. Even today, we are still moved by the words of Agnolo di Tura, an Italian who returning from a plague pit where half the population of his native Siena was buried simply stated, “And I, Agnolo di Tura, buried my wife and five children with my own hands.” Indeed, no one was exempt from this malady. It was truly an equal opportunity killer which did not distinguish between the haves and have-nots. The following quiz asks questions concerning the causes and random treatments utilized in that period. Additional questions detail the economic, social, intellectual, cultural, and political results of this horrific pandemic.
