At 4th Avenue in Anchorage, Alaska on the first Saturday of March each year, one of the most grueling winter sporting events in the world begins. Mushers and their teams of 12 to 16 dogs begin a race over some of the roughest, most beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer. Picture jagged mountain ranges, frozen river, dense forest, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast. Add to that temperatures far below zero, winds that can cause a complete loss of visibility, long hours of darkness, treacherous climbs and gully plunges, and you have ‘The Last Great Race’ - THE IDITAROD.
