Setting: the Russian Crimea, 1854, a high plateau, or escarpment, overlooking a battlefield near the port of Balaclava. A British army commander looks over a valley, which starts near the base of the plateau below. The valley stretches away in the distance, about 2000 meters (1 1/2 miles). The left side of the valley, the Fedioukine Heights, are low rolling hills held by the Russians, the enemy. The right side of the valley, Causeway Heights, is similar but topped by a series of small forts, or redoubts, containing British cannon. Some of the redoubts have just been captured by the Russians and the British commander wants them back. Facing him, at the far end of the valley, is a battery of Russian artillery.
