The Rockabilly sound can be difficult to define. It is one of the earliest and most enduring forms of rock music, drawing from Country roots, mingled with the traditionally black Rhythm & Blues that white parents did not allow their youngsters to listen to in the 50s...but they couldn't keep the kids and the music apart for long! Unlike Doo-Wop, which featured three and four part vocal harmonies in lieu of heavy instrumentation, Rockabilly made the wailing lead guitar, thumping upright bass and prominent percussion more the focal point of a recording rather than perfection of vocals and harmonies...the backbeat dominated. Elvis is probably the best known definer of Rockabilly music, but such greats as Carl Perkins, Bill Haley & The Comets, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis came to fame with their unique Rockabilly stylings. The sound carries on today through such groups as The Stray Cats. The Rockabilly Hall of Fame is located in Burns, TN and draws a huge annual attendance. See how many of these Rockabilly Hall of Famers and pioneers you can remember!
