The Top 10 Most Expensive Paintings Ever Sold

Patrons of the arts spend millions of dollars every year, as they try to get their hands on the world's most sought-after prized paintings. This quiz will feature the most current updated list of the top 10 most expensive paintings ever sold at auction or privately. A lot of lists out there on the Internet aren’t quite as up-to-date, most of them having been revised only as late as November 2007. But this list I found at theartwolf, an online Art magazine that was last updated April 2008. The list will start with the 10th most expensive, working up to #1. In most cases I’ll mention the art work’s title and some facts about it as well as it’s price, and you’ll have to chose which artist painted it. Or vice versa…you’ll have to choose the title of the painting from the multiple choices.
This current list does not include certain works that have been rumored of late to have been sold for record sums, because these rumors are not yet confirmed. Among those are the "Madonna dei fusi" painted by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1501. It is suspected of being sold privately for $150 million in the late 1990s to a private buyer. But this sum is also suspected of being highly exaggerated. If true though, it would be the #1 painting on the list.
Another unsubstantiated painting sale is Vincent Van Gogh’s "Self-portrait with Bandaged Ear", 1889. This significant painting had been in the Chicago collection of Leigh B. Block and was then sold to the Niarchos family. The figure of $90 million has been surmised, but never confirmed. It would by most accounts though, not be an unrealistic amount.
Another work not on the list quite yet, but undoubtedly will be soon, is "Portrait of a Young Man " by Titian. It is currently owned by the Earl of Halifax and he has put it up for sale, with an asking price of about £50 - 65 million ($77.5 - 95 million). The National Gallery of London is trying to keep the picture in England though, hoping to acquire it for less money than the foreign buyers would pay.
So for now, 2008, here are the top 10, starting with #10.
I hope you enjoy the quiz and please do take a moment to rate it afterward with a delicate brush stroke of the keypad.
Best wishes,
Bill
