Someone is considered obese if they have a body-mass index of 30 or more. According to the 2006 study by 'The Trust For America's Health', people in the South seem to be the most obese in the United States. Nutritionist Mary Dorfman attributes this to fried foods: "A lot of their foods are fried. Fried foods add a lot of calories." Also fast-food restaurants sell cheaper, fattier foods and they particularly target poorer residents, and Southern states have some of the nation's highest rates of poverty. Although residents of the Northeast are among the leanest of all the states, obesity rates are nevertheless still rising in all states. To get on with it, here are the the top 10 most obese states and some questions about the cuisine in those states.
