Reelfoot Lake is a beautiful scenic resort, sportsman's paradise, tourist attraction and wildlife refuge in the northwest corner of Tennessee. It also features a state park and museum. It attracts thousands of tourists, hunters and fishermen throughout the year. The west and south banks are lined with quaint restaurants, motels, gift shops and bait shops.
It was created by the New Madrid Earthquake in 1811-1812, which caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards, resulting in this natural lake.
This is a well-known legend around the lake. In the 19th century, the region was called Indian Country. A Chickasaw Indian Chief was born with a deformed foot. He was called Kalopin, meaning Reelfoot. He fell in love with Laughing Eyes, an Indian Maiden of the Choctaw tribe. Chief Copiah, father of Laughing Eyes, did not want his daughter to marry the chieftan with a club foot. Reelfoot was given a warning by the Great Spirit that an Indian must not steal his wife from a neighboring tribe. Reelfoot ignored the warning and captured Laughing Eyes from her people and took her away. In the midst of their marriage ceremony, the festivities and the tom-toms, the ground began to tremble and shake, by the Great Spirit stamping his foot and causing the earthquake. Reelfoot, Laughing Eyes and the tribesmen were buried at the bottom of the lake.
