The World's Full of Oxymorons (Oxymora)
![]() |
An oxymoron is a figure of speech that combines two normally contradictory terms e.g.'s act natural/ inside out/small fortune. It has been estimated (by whom I don't know)that in a normal conversation of 5 minutes duration we use between 3 and 5 oxymora. Now then (an oxymoron)the term derives from the Greek "OXY" (sharp) and "MORES" (dull or dumb). The top sploofusers will immediately recognise that oxymoron is an single word oxymoron itself!!!! According to the excellent Wikipedia.org site there are three types of oxymora, viz. -genuine oxymorons -perceived oxymorons -joke or opinion oxymorons Genuine oxymora are those which use terms that are inherent contradictions such as anarchy rules, whereas perceived oxymora are loose definitions which are simple contradictions with NO SENSE OF PARADOX such as civil war. Civil means "between citizens",but can also mean"non-military" whereas wars are military affairs. So perceived oxymora rely on one word of the pair having various meanings. Joke or Opinion oxymora are created deliberately based on stereotyping such as "honest lawyer" "Australian culture", "government efficiency" "rock opera". The quizzes (see World of Oxymora II) use all three types. In this quiz you have to work out which word would make an oxymoron of the question word.e.g. Question ; Original Answers: A)Tracing B)Copy C)Picture D)Painting E)Transfer Solution - answer B Original Copy is the oxymoron. End of lesson Happy Sploofusing..
