Timbuktu! What a name! Can it fail to capture anyone's imagination? Centre of fabled mysteries for centuries ... the byword for the ultimate in 19th. century exploration ... legendary city of ancient university, fabulous riches, Islamic purity, centre of empire, monumental architecture, unimagined wealth in gold ...... But now it's little more than a dilapidated collection of wind-worn buildings in the sands. What happened? I've never yet got to Timbuktu, but I fully intend to, and will. Consequently, I've perhaps studied it more than many other places I have reached! So few, if any, taking this quiz will have personal knowledge of the answers. But, at the very least, surely the name 'Timbuktu' deserves a few minutes of your time? Whatever your score, I hope then that 'Timbuktu' will have ceased to be merely a name - and that you, too, might also be encouraged to make that fabled journey!
