Did you know that in Ancient Egypt women had many of the same rights as men: they could own property, could be parties to contracts, could initiate civil court cases and hand in hand with those rights, could also be sued.

But in Ancient Greece women lived under male domination their whole lives; the only rank they could hold was that of "priestess." In Sparta though, women seemed to have more rights. In Ancient Rome, women had citizenship but couldn't vote.

International Women's Day was this past March 8th. The day has its origins in Copenhagen, Denmark where the International Conference of Working Women was held in 1910. The day is intended to celebrate the achievements of women in all fields, and to point out the adversities women face as they strive for progress in the 21st century. Thirty years ago in the United States, CEDAW, a declaration calling for the eradication of all forms of discrimination against women was drafted and still seeks Senate ratification.
