Singer/songwriter/actor Tom Waits is described in the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll (Simon & Schuster, 2001) as "a one-man beatnik revival." That magazine also ranked him #90 on their list of the all-time Greatest Rock Artists. The encyclopedia goes on to say, "He generally appears with a cap pulled over his brow, a cigarette dangling from his stubbled face, talk-singing and/or mumbling jive in a cancerous growl to the accompaniment of cool saxophone jazz; he also writes romantic ballads."..."He grew up in California, where he listened to Bing Crosby, Stephen Foster parlor songs, and George Gershwin.
