Not Quite a Gold Medal Performance

Picture this: You're in the dying moments of a sporting match. Looking up at the scoreboard, you realise there's no way you can lose now. You wipe the sweat off your brow, take a deep breath and relax just a little. The trophy is so close you can see your name engraved on it. All you have to do is keep going and you're assured a place in history.

The people in this quiz felt that way too. BIG MISTAKE! All of them do have a place in history. Just not how they would have liked.
