Trick for multiplying by Nine

|This quiz is for all those 2nd and 3rd graders who are trying to master the multiplication tables. The nines are one of the easiest sets to master. Learn this trick and you'll be super fast on those timed tests. When doing the nines look first at the OTHER number. Subtract 1 from it and that will give you the tens digit for your answer. Then look at that tens digit and figure out how many you need to add to it to make 9. That will be the one's digit in your answer. Example: 6 x 9 = 54 Look at the other number, 6. Take one away which is 5 - that is the tens digit in the answer. How many do you have to add to 5 to make 9? - 4 so that is the ones digit. Once you have mastered the "trick" the nines will be really easy. Try it out to see if your time is really fast. It may take a bit of practice. |
After you take the quiz try this. Write each of the facts for the nines in a column. Then look at the ones digits of each answer going down the column. Do the same for the tens - you should see a neat pattern. Have fun!
