Unitarians/Universalists On U.S. Postage Stamps
![]() |
Even though my quiz, "People on USPS Black Heritage Commemorative Stamps", has, to date, had a disappointingly low number of takers, I am trying again with this quiz about Unitarians and Universalists who have been honored as subjects of United States Postal Service stamps. I was raised as a Unitarian Universalist ("UU"), and remember starting a Stamp Club when I was 11 or 12 at the "church", leading to my still somewhat active interest in Unitarians (broadly speaking) on postage stamps. (Interestingly, based on the fairly large number of UU websites that include content about Unitarians on stamps, this is a topic of interest among many UUs.) I have deferred writing this quiz on several occasions, mostly because the Unitarians of today as represented by the Unitarian Universalist Association, bear only a passing resemblance to the Unitarians and Universalists, as applicable, of even 100 years ago. Traditionally, Unitarians were self-described Christians who believed in the oneness of God, rejected the trinity, and believed in the humanity of Christ, albeit a man with a unique relationship to God. (I know, I know, some Christians will reject the belief system I have just described as "Christian".) Universalists rejected eternal damnation, believing that God was too good and loving not to save all humanity. Over time, Unitarian and Universalist views largely converged, resulting in the establishment of the Unitarian Universalist Association in 1961. In a 1997 survey of UUs, in which they were asked to describe their religious beliefs - they were not restricted to a single descriptor - only 13 said "Christian" while 54% selected "humanist" and 18% "atheist", among others. There remains a small, traditional Unitarian strain within the more orthodox Christian tradition. These individuals are not associated with the UUs, do not wish to be confused with the UUs, and are not covered in this quiz. In this quiz, you are mostly asked to identify the Unitarian, Universalist or UU who appears on a United States postage stamp from the information provided in each question. In two questions you are asked to provide information about a Unitarian, Universalist, or UU who is honored on a United States Postal Service stamp. The image introducing this quiz is of a 1961 stamp, featuring Horace Greeley, who established "The New York Herald Tribune" and ran for president against Ulysses Grant in 1872. A social reformer and idealist, Greeley was a Universalist, and is claimed by UUs today as one of their own.
