For the political junkies out there going through withdrawal now that the 2008 presidential election is over, I offer the second of my quizzes exploring past U.S. presidential elections, this one covering the election of 1876. The outcome of the 1876 election was extremely controversial - at least as controversial as the 2000 victory of George W. Bush over Al Gore. For instance, Rutherford B. Hayes's victory in the election was described in the "Cincinnati Enquirer" as "the monster fraud of the century". Hayes's victory resulted in many nicknames being coined for the new president; my favorite is "Rutherfraud Hayes". This quiz covers the candidates and controversies of the 1876 presidential election. If you recognize the person in the photograph introducing this quiz, you know the answer to question 4. WARNING: This quiz is intended to be taken at a leisurely pace and was not created to accommodate speed demons. It appears that my history is foggy. I must enroll in a history course in the new year.
I really thought the guy in the picture's beard was too short to have been R. Hayes
This was a great quiz.
