Hip hop music generally consists of a rhythmic style of speaking called rap over backing beats. It began in the 1970s in New York City, predominantly with African Americans and Latinos.

In 2003, VH1 compiled a list of the 50 Greatest Hip Hop Artists. These are the top 10 on its list. The photo on this page is of the group ranked #1.
