|The "Virgin Soldiers" (belatedly nicknamed from a novel's title) were Brit youngsters who, through OTC, CCF, National Service, Short Service Commissions, or whatever other excuse was dreamed up, found themselves conscripted at the age of 18 for two years, and then were often on the wrong end of terrorists (or whoever) fifty years before the current problems.|
These innocents (although the virginity part probably didn't last long!) were whipped away from their quiet suburbs and thrown into jungles, deserts or wherever to kill people before the USA had even heard of Vietnam.
Yep, these are the UK's often-forgotten wars.
The 'virgin soldiers', whether they were killed themselves or not, obviously didn't save the world after all, 'cos we still seem to be trying to do that.
Please excuse the cynicism, but it's still with me.
OK - let's relax and enjoy dragging up our grey matter to remember some of these maybe forgotten conflicts - and men.
