Carreau on 11/07/2006
|Starting in the 1930s and lasting through World War II and beyond, the Big Band sound prevailed all across America.|
Sometimes known as swing bands or dance bands, they grew out of the jazz tradition. Although the sound varied from band to band, they all featured brass instruments, clarinets and saxophones, and a rhythm section. The typical band would have a dozen or more musicians, along with one or more vocalists. They often went on tour, appearing at dance halls and ballrooms, attracting crowds of young people eager to dance. Many bands were featured on radio programs, and their records could be heard on jukeboxes everywhere.
See if you can identify these ten band leaders who were among the best known.
