|The ladies' competition began at Wimbledon in 1884. In the early days women wore full length dresses over stockings. The dresses were heavy and cumbersome. White clothing was common in Wimbledon in the 1890s in order to conceal perspiration. The white color has been traditional at Wimbledon until the present. In fact in 1963 a rule was made that only white could be worn. If a player has any doubt about their outfits they must present them to officials prior to play. On the whole most outfits are accepted, providing they are white. There have been some interesting and unusual outfits and you will find out about these in this quiz. |
