The mid-19th century was a time of amazing change throughout the world. In this early year of the Victorian era, European political influence spread over the globe, much to the dismay of peoples in America, Asia and Africa. However, European and American material culture transformed life, forever. Left: The Great Eastern, one of the most famous ships of the 19th century and icon of the British industrial revolution, accomplished its most famous mission in 1866 and created the first link leading to today's world.
